Rooftop bars in London aren’t just spots to enjoy a drink; they’re vertical escapes from the city’s relentless pace. A top‑tier venue will give you a 360‑degree view, a thoughtfully curated cocktail list, and an atmosphere that shifts with the time of day. In this guide I’ll walk you through five spots that hit all three marks, complete with the details you need to plan your night.

1. The Sky Garden – A Free, Open‑Air Experience

Perched atop the Walkie Talkie, the Sky Garden opens its doors at 10 pm for sunset sessions. With 350 seats, the terrace offers a panoramic sweep of the Thames, St. Paul’s, and the Shard. The rotating bar changes its menu every quarter; this week’s highlight is the “Garden Gimlet” – a gin‑based cocktail with a whisper of elderflower. The only catch? Seating is limited, so arriving early is key if you want a table with a view.

2. The Shard’s Aqua – High‑End, High‑Pressure

Aqua sits on the 31st floor of the Shard and claims the title of Europe’s tallest bar. Boasting 250 seats, it delivers a 180‑degree panorama of London’s skyline. The menu features the signature “Shard Sour,” a bourbon twist with a splash of smoked paprika. Prices lean toward the premium end: a classic martini is £28, while a glass of house wine starts at £20. For those craving exclusivity, the VIP lounge on the 33rd floor offers private seating and a dedicated sommelier. The downside? The floor above hosts a rooftop restaurant, so the music can be louder than you expect.

3. The Rooftop at The OXO Tower – A Cozy, Intimate Setting

On the 15th floor of the OXO Tower, this bar accommodates 120 guests in a relaxed setting. Its menu focuses on craft cocktails made with locally sourced ingredients. A standout is the “Ox‑Tonic” – gin, tonic, and a splash of cucumber bitters. Open from 6 pm to midnight, the bar offers a happy hour from 7 pm to 8 pm, with all drinks 20% off. The only limitation is the midnight closing time, so plan accordingly.

4. The Roof – A Trendy, Multi‑Level Experience

Located on the top floor of the O2, The Roof is a three‑level venue. The first level is a casual bar with a 30‑seat capacity, the second level hosts a full cocktail menu and a small dance floor, and the third level is a private club with 50 seats and 24‑hour entry. The signature drink is the “O2 Sunset,” a rum‑based cocktail with a splash of mango puree. Cocktails average £18, placing the price point in the mid‑range. The only drawback is the £35 entrance fee for the private club.
